Oklahoma football: A look back at the 2015 recruiting class
There’s a whole industry based around trying to rank recruits before they ever step onto a high school field, but it’s hard to argue there’s at least one part speculation that goes into the two parts of science when it comes to recruiting. The same goes for the Oklahoma football recruiting class of 2015.
It was an interesting time for the Oklahoma football program. The Sooners made a change at offensive coordinator, hiring a largely unproven young coach from East Carolina named Lincoln RIley to take over the helm of the offense. He brought with him receivers coach Dennis Simmons. Cale Gundy, long thought of as an ace recruiter on the Sooners’ staff, made the move from running backs to inside receivers. Offensive line coach Bill Bedenbaugh was just settling in, pulling in his first full class as member of the Sooners’ staff. It was also Jerry Montgomery’s final class as a member of the Oklahoma football staff.
On defense the Sooners were coming off a rough year in 2014. They were embarrassed on their home field against Baylor and in the bowl game against Clemson, but still had some momentum left over from the previous year’s Sugar Bowl win over Alabama.
Looking back at the class there were nine busts (players who never saw significant playing time with the program), 10 contributors (career backups, special teams players or part-time starters), four starters (full-time starters for one or more seasons) and six standouts (players with all-conference or national honors who are either headed to or being considered by the NFL).
Here’s a ranking of all 26 prospects alongside each player’s original rank in the class, according to Rivals.com.
No. 26 – Dominique Hearne | offensive line | Original rank: No. 25
Hearne was a 6-foot-4, 280-pound offensive guard from Lancaster, Texas. He was ranked the No. 46 player at his position in the country according to Rivals. Hearne redshirted his freshman year, then left the program due to academic reasons going into his second year in Norman. Grade: Bust
No. 25 – Antoine Stephens | cornerback | Original rank: No. 22
A three-star prospect from Dallas Kimball, Stephens had the size and speed to become a standout at the next level, but never could quite put it all together at Oklahoma. He left the program during the spring 2017 semester. Grade: Bust
