Oklahoma football: Bob Stoops reportedly taking XFL coaching job
At least one major news outlet is reporting that Bob Stoops will become the head coach and general manager of the upcoming XFL franchise in Dallas.
Dean Blevins of News 9 in Oklahoma City broke the story earlier today, which was then picked up by major news outlets all over the country.
Bob Stoops led the Sooners to a 190-48 record, 10 Big 12 Championships and one National Championship during his 18-year head coaching stint at Oklahoma. Bob Stoops surprised Sooner fans everywhere when he retired last summer just months before the start of the 2017 season, handing the reigns of the program over to Lincoln Riley.
The XFL is set to return in spring 2020 after a 19-year absence. The league played one season back in 2001 before folding. It is owned by World Wrestling Entertainment Vince McMahon. Teams are expected to have 40-man active rosters and play a 10-game season.
Though the league is expected to simplify some rules compared to the NFL, this version is trying to separate itself from some of the stunt marketing used back in 2001. They have done so by hiring former NCAA Executive vice president for regulatory affairs Oliver Luck to serve as league commissioner. Stoops’ respectability and gravitas would certainly help to further legitimize the league.
The Dallas team doesn’t have a nickname yet, though that news could come tomorrow at the same press conference. The squad will play its home games at Globe Life Park in Arlington, which also houses the Texas Rangers baseball team.
Houston, L.A., New York, Saint Louis, Seattle, Tampa Bay and Washington D.C. will host the other seven XFL franchises. None of them have named head coaches or general managers yet.
