Oklahoma football: Jalen Hurts decides on Oklahoma
The tide turned in favor of Oklahoma football on Wednesday as a legitimate national title contender in the 2019 season, despite losing back-to-back Heisman-winning quarterbacks.
The Sooners shored up their quarterback situation today with the announcement that Jalen Hurts will transfer to the University of Oklahoma, effective immediately.
Jalen Hurts posted a 26-2 record as the starting quarterback at Alabama and played a vital role in back-to-back National Championship campaigns earning the SEC Player of the Year award in 2017. He chose the Sooners over a long list of suitors that included Miami, Maryland and Florida State among others.
During his time at Alabama Jalen Hurts threw for 5,481 yards and 46 touchdowns compared to just 12 interceptions over his career with the Crimson Tide. Jalen Hurts has also amassed 1,945 yards and 22 scores on the ground.
The graduate transfer will be eligible to play immediately after earning his B.A. in communication and information sciences. He will compete with redshirt freshman Tanner Mordecai and true freshman Spencer Rattler for the starting job through spring and fall camp.
Should Hurts win the job it would mark the fourth-straight year a transfer quarterback has started at Oklahoma dating back to Baker Mayfield in 2015 and encompassing every season the offense has been under the command of Lincoln Riley. So far every quarterback during that time has earned an invitation to New York for the Heisman ceremony with the last two winning it.
It remains to be seen whether Hurts will seize the starting job and take control of the OU offense, but if he does there are a bevy of leathal weapons at his immediate disposal. CeeDee Lamb and Grant Calceterra both return as starters and Charleston Rambo will also be back coming off a special performance in the Orange Bowl against Alabama. The Sooners also just signed three of the top four receivers in the nation for the 2019 class according to Rivals.com.
