Other names on the list

Though  Hurts is the headliner there are a few other quarterback options for the Sooners if they are going to go the transfer route (though none of them are very likely).

Tate Martell

Current Ohio State quarterback Tate Martell is one of several quarterbacks to enter his name into the transfer portal. Martell was as four-star prospect out of Bishop Gorman High School in Nevada (the same high school that produced Sooner great DeMarco Murray).

Martell would come in with three years of eligibility left and already has experience in a spread scheme with Ohio State.

This scenario seems far less likely than Hurts. Martell would almost certainly have to sit a year before he could play at Oklahoma and by that time one would think Rattler or Mordecai would have the job locked down.

Shane Buechele

This is an insane idea with almost no chance of working out, but holy cow would it make for some interesting storylines. The current Texas quarterback will be a graduate transfer with immediate eligibility.

Being a grad transfer means he wouldn’t be subject to the intra-conference transfer rule the Big 12 passed a few years back. It’s also worth noting that Buechele comes from a Sooner family.

Once again, we aren’t saying this is in the remote realm of possibility, but it would make the Red River Rivalry game (and a potential championship rematch) as fun as it has ever been.

Ben Hicks – SMU

Much like Buschele Hicks is a grad transfer and SMU’s all-time school leader in passing has experience in a spread offense after spending several seasons playing for Chad Morris.

Much like the rest of this list, this one seems like an ill-fated longshot. The Sooners would have to take a last-minute shot at Hicks, then convince him to join the team rather than go to Arkansas where he could reunite with former head coach Morris.

Hicks has a quick release and seems to be a good decision maker, but being a Sooner probably isn’t in his future.

Brandon Wimbush – Notre Dame

Wimbush started 15 games for the Fighting Irish before losing his job to Ian Book. He would come in with experience in big-game situations and has the athleticism to buy time and make plays in the Riley offense.

One would have to question his ability in the passing game, which would clearly disqualify him from consideration if it were true. Also it appears Wimbush is already being heavily courted by the likes of Josh Heupel at UCF and Penn State among others. There’s also no history tying Wimbush to Riley or Oklahoma.
