The Spencer Rattler effect?

There is the less-likely scenario that Spencer Rattler, the No. 1 high school quarterback in the country according to both Rivals and 247 sports, scared Kendall off, but this seems less likely. Rattler won’t even arrive until the summer and faces a sharp learning curve in Riley’s offense going into the season.

Homesickness?

Austin Kendall grew up in North Carolina and was originally committed to play at East Carolina before Lincoln Riley took the Oklahoma job. Kendall decided to follow Riley to Norman, where he has made his home ever since.

It just so happens that Mack Brown, a blue-blood coach with a national title on his resume, just took over at North Carolina. He brought an Air Raid offensive coordinator with him in Phil Longo.

Could Kendall have his eyes cast eastward to be closer to friends and family? Sure, he would be primed for success should he win the starting job at Oklahoma, but never underestimate the drawing power of home. It can be quite strong.

A transfer coming in?

Another reason for Kendall’s decision might be news of a potential transfer entering the Sooners’ quarterback ranks.

The NCAA transfer portal has quickly changed the game when it comes to players switching teams and unofficially ushered in the era of “free agency” in college football.

There are a few good reasons the Sooners could very well be looking at a transfer quarterback.

For one, the last two guys to transfer in to Oklahoma from elsewhere are currently polishing Heisman trophies, meaning Riley has had pretty good luck with this process.

For another, OU would be a top destination for quarterback transfers. With Riley’s recent success mentoring the position and the bevy of offensive weapons at their potential disposal, any quarterback that doesn’t give Oklahoma a long, hard look is doing himself a disservice.
