Bad: OU will give up some big plays, especially against the Big 12

The Sooners aren’t going to suddenly become Alabama. There won’t be a ton of goose eggs coming on the opposing side of the scoreboard (maybe one or two in non-conference if everything goes right).

“One doesn’t beat you,” Grinch  told ESPN back in 2016.

He went on to add. ” “There just hasn’t been a lot of good defenses attached to the Air Raid for a number of reasons. Now, the flip side is you don’t have to shut people out, so there are two sides to that.”

That means we will see some touchdowns from some Longhorns, Cowboys, Red Raiders and Mountaineers in the near future (something Sooner fans have all become accustomed to anyway, I suppose). We just have to hope the big momentum plays and turnovers his scheme bring with them are enough to compensate and give OU an advantage.

This might not be the answer some defensive purists were looking for from the Sooners, as many wanted to see another version of those scary OU defenses from the early 2000s return, but both Mike Stoops and Brent Venables had plenty of shots to bring back those kinds of results and both are coaching elsewhere now for a reason. Maybe this philosophy’s time has come?
