It was announced prior to the Big 12 home opener with Baylor that Kyler Murray would not start at quarterback as punishment for a team violation (reported as being late for practice one day that week). Murray’s suspension, however, lasted just one series. It may also have sparked him to a record-tying performance.

Murray entered the game on OU’s second offensive possession and accounted for 477 of the Sooners’ 607 yards of offense. He completed 17 of 21 passes for 432 yards and six touchdowns and rushed for 45 additional yards and ran for another touchdown. His seven total touchdowns tied a school record set by Baker Mayfield the year before.

The Sooners scored at least 14 points in every quarter in scoring the highest point total they would all season. Redshirt freshman Kennedy Brooks had a breakout game with 107 yards rushing, and Marquise “Hollywood” Brown and CeeDee Lamb both exceeded 100 receiving yards.

Score-wise, OU more than atoned for the difficult game with Army on the same field just a week before, but the Sooners still ran half as many plays as Baylor (101 to 54) and possessed the ball for just under 23 minutes in the entire game.

The win improved Oklahoma’s record to 5-0 and set up the annual Red River game with No. 19 Texas the week following.
