Oklahoma football: Sooners up to No. 6 in AP/Coaches polls

Oklahoma football continued its slow rise in the Associated Press and Coaches Poll, advancing into the No. 6 spot this week.

LSU’s loss to Alabama on Saturday enabled teams in the bottom half of the top 10 to move up a spot, including the Sooners, as LSU dropped down to the No. 10 spot in both polls for Week 11 in the 2018 college football season.

Notably, West Virginia, Oklahoma’s likely opponent in the Big 12 Championship game, moved up five spots in the AP poll, from No. 12 to No. 7, right behind the Sooners. The Mountaineers (7-1, 5-1) defeated Texas 42-41 on Saturday, dropping the Longhorns to No. 19 in the Coaches Poll. Texas remained at No. 15 in the AP Top 25.

The top three teams in both polls, Alabama, Clemson and Notre Dame remain unchanged from last week. Michigan and Georgia fill out the top five in both polls.

West Virginia, Ohio State, LSU and Washington State fall in behind the Sooners in the AP poll this week. Ohio State, West Virginia, LSU and Washington State are the four teams that follow OU in this week’s Coaches Poll.

It will be interesting to see where the College Football Playoff selection committee ranks the Sooners and the Mountaineers this week after Saturday’s games. The two teams will meet on the final weekend of the regular season in what could be a preview of the Big 12 title game to be played the following weekend at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas.

Oklahoma’s one loss was to Texas in the Red River rivalry game this season. The Longhorns lost on Saturday to West Virginia, which lost last month at now No. 24 Iowa State, the same place where Oklahoma won on Week 3 of the season. You be the judge on where the Sooners will be positioned in the second installment of the CFP rankings on Tuesday. My guess is that OU will be at No. 6.

Oklahoma is home for the next two weekends, hosting Oklahoma State and Kansas, before going on the road to West Virginia for a Black Friday matchup against West Virginia on Nov. 23.
