Oklahoma football: Kyler Murray suspended? Here’s what we know
Rumors are circulating the college football world this morning that Austin Kendall will get his first career start against Baylor today.
As first reported by longtime OU reporter Dean Blevins last night, it appears Kyler Murray‘s status as the starter for the Baylor game is up in the air.
Rumors have been rampant in the last 12 hours that Murray may be sitting out some time as a punishment for missing a meeting or class this past week.
SBNation is reporting that Kendall’s mom – who has a protected and private Twitter account – tweeted her son will start against the Bears yesterday.
OU Insider officially announced the breaking news earlier today, though it remains unconfirmed by the University at this point.
If the rumors are to be believed, this isn’t a major violation and there’s little reason for Sooner fans to be concerned going forward. It is simply housekeeping and Riley making sure his house is in order.
Murray got his first career start at Oklahoma last year in a similar situation when Baker Mayfield was suspended for the first series of the regular season finale against West Virginia. Murray led the Sooners on a two-play scoring drive in that series before giving way to Mayfield for the rest of the first half.
Kendall has the credentials carry the Sooners offense for however long Murray will sit. He pushed Murray for the starting job all summer and has completed 24-of-32 passes for 232 yards and three touchdowns with no interceptions through his OU career so far.
Whether a potential suspension lasts for one play, one quarter or one game remains to be seen with no confirmation from the school or coaching staff. We’ll all have to find out together when Oklahoma kicks off against Baylor at 2:30 p.m. today. The game will be broadcast on ABC.
