No. 3 — Baker Mayfield, Oklahoma quarterback (2015-17)

Given Baker Mayfield’s outstanding three seasons at Oklahoma, which ended this past January in a thrilling College Football Playoff loss to Georgia in two overtimes, it is easy to understand why many Sooner fans would rank the former walk-on and 2017 Heisman Trophy winner as the greatest quarterback in Sooner history.

After all, Mayfield is the one we have the freshest memory of, and his 34-6 overall record as Oklahoma’s starting quarterback the past three season and two College Football Playoff appearances in that time frame speak for themselves.

Mayfield ranks second in FBS (Football Bowl Subdivision, formerly NCAA Division I) history in passing efficiency (175.4) [former Sooner Sam Bradford hold the record with a career PE rating of 175.6], third in passing yards per attempt (9.7), fourth in touchdown passes (131), fifth in total offense (15,690) and seventh in passing yards (14, 607).

After playing his freshman year at Texas Tech, where he started the first five games for the Red Raiders at quarterback, Mayfield decided that Texas Tech was not the best fit for him, and the player who grew up in Austin in the shadow of the University of Texas, but always rooted for the Oklahoma Sooners, decided to pursue his lifelong dream of playing for Oklahoma.

Sooner fans couldn’t have been happier that he did.

In both his second and third seasons at OU, Mayfield set a new FBS record for passing efficiency in a single season. His 198.9 passing efficiency rating this past season stands as an NCAA record.

Mayfield also owns the FBS record for consecutive games with at least two touchdown passes (27).

He is second in OU history with 20 300-yard passing games and four games in which he threw for 400 or more.

In addition to being the reigning Heisman Trophy winner (he was a finalist for the award all three years he was at OU), Mayfield also won the Maxwell Award as the best collegiate player in 2017 and  the Davey O’Brien Award as the nation’s top quarterback.

Mayfield was the No. 1 overall pick in the 2017 NFL Draft, the top selection of the Cleveland Browns. He is the fourth Oklahoma football player to be taken No. 1 in the draft (Lee Roy Selmon, Billy Sims and Sam Bradford are the others).
