No. 6 – Quarterback Jason White, 2003 Heisman Trophy winner

Jason White was the starting quarterback on the 2003 Oklahoma team that featured the most electric offensive attack in college football. The Sooners eclipsed 600 total points that season, averaging 42 points a game.

With players like Sam Bradford and Baker Mayfield coming after him, it is easy to forget how accurate a passer White was. He threw the ball with remarkable accuracy, and was especially lethal on deep throws. The year he won the Heisman, he completed 62 percent of his pass attempts for 3,846 yards, 40 touchdowns, and had a touchdown to interception ratio of four to one. He was No. 7 nationally in passing efficiency (158.11)

Twice during the 2003 season, White threw five touchdowns in a game, and his 40 touchdown passes set a new school record at that time.

Oklahoma was No. 1 in the country and a perfect 12-0 entering the Big 12 Championship game that season, but lost to Kansas State by 28 points (35-7) for the conference title and followed that with a second straight loss, to LSU, in the BCS Championship game.

As a result of two knee surgeries during his college career, White was not a mobile quarterback in his final seasons at OU, which limited his ability to scramble under heavy pass rushes. That is ironic, because before he encountered knee problems, he was a very good running with the football, although throwing the ball was his strong suit.

In addition to the Heisman, White also won the Davey O’Brien award as college football’s best quarterback in 2003.
