Oklahoma baseball has been flirting with disaster for several weeks. This past weekend disaster took the form of Bedlam.

The 18th-ranked Sooners entered its weekend series with Oklahoma State having lost two of three games in each of their past two Big 12 series. Against the in-state-rival Cowboys, Oklahoma made it three for three — losses, that is.

Oklahoma State swept the lifeless Sooners, outscoring OU by a combined score of 27-3 and dropped OU’s Big 12 record to 10-8 (28-18 overall). That’s a far cry from three weeks ago, when Oklahoma owned a record of 8-0 and sat atop the league standings.

Since defeating TCU 6-3 on April 8, the Sooners have gone into a free fall, losing eight of their last 10 conference games. And they were totally dominated by Oklahoma State over the weekend.

I’ve said this before, but it bears repeating: The hole the baseball team is digging for itself is disturbingly familiar to what happened to the men’s Oklahoma basketball team this past season.

In being swept by Oklahoma State, the Sooners not only were outscored by 24 runs but were outhit 39-15. The Cowboys, who also defeated OU in a non-conference Bedlam showdown earlier this season, have won seven straight games over their in-state rivals. Oklahoma scored just once and recorded just five hits in a 7-1 defeat in the earlier game.

There is not much positive to report on from OU’s weekend baseball performance, but perhaps they can take some solace in the fact that the next two Big 12 series are against the bottom two teams in the conference standings. The Sooners host Kansas State (3-15 in the Big 12, 18-26 overall) next weekend and finish the regular season May 17-19 with a three-game set at Kansas (3-11, 19-24).

Here are some more numbers that mattered from a disappointing baseball weekend for Sooenr fans:

1 – The 8-0 Oklahoma State shutout of the Sooners in game one of the series on Friday was the first time OU has been held scoreless all season.

1.1 – Right-handed OU starter Devon Perez lasted just one out into the second inning on Saturday, six runs on seven hits.

4 – Oklahoma’s four hits in the 10-1 loss on Saturday were the fewest by the Sooners in a Big 12 game this season.

6 – Junior third baseman Brylie Ware recorded four hits in the Oklahoma State series and extended his hitting streak to six games.

10 – Friday night starter Jake Irvin struck out 10 Oklahoma State batters in five innings, but also yielded five runs in an 8-0 loss, his first of the season after five wins.

20 – Oklahoma scored just three runs total in the three-game Bedlam series, but left 20 runners stranded in the three games.
