Oklahoma softball: Notable numbers for reigning national champs

Right now, the most significant number in the 2018 Oklahoma softball season is three.

That is the number the Sooners will add to their back-to-back Women’s College World Series championships if they are successful in repeating as national champions. And they are looking every bit to be one of the two teams there at the end, as they have been the last two seasons under head coach Patti Gasso.

In posting 24 consecutive wins and off to their best season start since 2013, Oklahoma is putting up eye-popping numbers in all facets of the game that rank among the very best in the nation. In 2013, the Sooners finished 57-4 and won their second national championship

As a team, the Sooners rank in the nation’s top 10 in the following statistical categories:

1 – Fielding percentage (.990)

1 – Scoring (7.17 runs per game

2 – Where OU ranks this week in the ESPN.com/USA Softball rankings.

2 – Won/loss percentage (.994)

2 – Earned run average (0.91)

3 – On-base percentage (.437)

3 – Slugging percentage (.551)

3T – Home runs per game (1.71)

4 – Batting average (.335)

Here are some more numbers that matter as OU softball looks ahead to the remaining 15 games of the regular season:

0 – Oklahoma losses since Feb. 24 (2-0 to Arizona).

0.40 – Sooner senior Paige Parker’s nation-best earned run average.

.169 – Opponents’ batting average when the Sooners play at home this season.

4 – Number of times under head coach Patti Gasso (in her 24th season at OU) that Oklahoma has gone undefeated in an entire calendar month, including March of this season.

14 – Games won by run-rule this season by the Sooners (a lead of eight or more runs at the end of five innings). They also have won 18 games by shutout.

16 – Consecutive home wins this season at Marita Hynes Field.

17 – Home runs through 36 games by OU freshman Jocelyn Alo, best in the Big 12 and No. 2 nationally.

34 – The Oklahoma pitching staff has given up just 34 runs in 36 games this season, the fewest of any team in NCAA Division I.

46 – Consecutive Big 12 series won by the Sooner softball teams.
