Oklahoma Sooners fans finish 5th in FanSided Fandom 250 college poll

Oklahoma Sooners fans have always felt they are among the best in the country, and now there is further evidence to support that notion.

For the second year in a row, the editors of FanSided have embarked on a quest to create the ultimate ranking of fandoms – from sports to entertainment to celebrities to brands. It’s the second annual Fandom 250.

There are no heartier or passionate fan bases than those who follow college sports. Fans develop a lifelong bond with their alma mater or favorite school, and throughout the college athletic year find themselves interchangeably celebrating or grieving over that school’s performance on the  grand college sports stage.

Of course, the more successful and the longer and richer the tradition is at a particular school, the bigger the fan following. Oklahoma football clearly falls into that category. With seven national championships and six Heisman Trophy winners to its credit, Sooner football is considered one of the blue bloods of the sport.

Some would have you believe that the University of Oklahoma built an institution that its football team could be proud of, when the truth is, it was exactly the opposite. Regardless, the fans came and they have kept coming by the tens of thousands to the point that the University of Oklahoma boasts one of the largest and most loyal fan bases in college sports.

That loyal fan base spoke loudly in the Fandom 250 voting, placing Sooner fans fifth in the ranking of the best college fans. OU fans finished 16th in the Fandom 250 college rankings a year ago.

The top five college fan bases in this year’s poll were No. 1 Ohio State, Alabama, Notre Dame, North Carolina and Oklahoma. You can view the entire top 25 college fan bases here.

While Oklahoma fans placed fifth in the college sports category, they also ranked 76th in the overall Fandom 250 voting, which included fans of professional sports teams, celebrities, entertainment and popular brands.
