Sept. 3, 2005 — TCU 17, Oklahoma 10 in Norman

The Sooners opened the 2005 season at home against TCU. OU was coming off a 12-1 campaign the year before, losing only to USC in the BCS Championship game. USC and Heisman Trophy-winning quarterback Matt Leinart hammered the Sooners 55-19 in the national championship game. No doubt, Stoops and his troops couldn’t wait to get the new season started after enduring a long, painful offseason.

Gary Patterson was in his fifth season as the TCU head coach. The Horned Frogs were unranked to begin the 2005 season after finishing 5-6 and in the middle of the pack in the Mountain West Conference.

The point spread in the game heavily favored the Sooners, who were established as a 25-point favorite playing at home. Oklahoma came into its 2005 season opener as the No. 7 team in the Associated Press Preseason Poll.

Even with Adrian Peterson at running back, the Sooners were unable to get much of anything going the entire afternoon against a stout TCU defense. Peterson gained just five yards rushing in the first half as TCU took a 10-0 halftime lead.

Oklahoma got an 11-yard touchdown run by Peterson and a Garrett Hartley field goal I the third quarter to knot the score at 10-all. The underdog Horned Frogs pushed across their second touchdown of the game early in the fourth quarter and shut down the Sooners the rest of the way to preserve the stunning upset.

A TCU news release after the game called the Horned Frog victory the school’s biggest upset in 45 years. The same release quoted Gary Patterson as saying:

"“I think that nine times out of 10, Oklahoma wins this game. Today was our one. We got a chance to show off on national TV and show America that TCU is not gone.”"

TCU forced four Oklahoma turnovers in the game (three fumbles and an interception). It was the Horned Frogs’ fourth win over the Sooners in 10 all-time meetings to that point and Oklahoma’s first loss at home since the 2001 season (when 27-point underdog Oklahoma State defeated No. 4-ranked Oklahoma).
