Nov. 24, 2001 — Oklahoma State 16, Oklahoma 13 in Norman

On Nov. 24, 2001, the year after Bob Stoops’ Sooners won the school’s seventh national championship in just his second season as head coach, Oklahoma was ranked 4th in the country, with a 10-1 record, and was at home hosting in-state rival and unranked Oklahoma State. The Sooners were listed as 27-point favorites in this Bedlam rivalry game, and for good reason given Oklahoma State’s 3-7 record coming into the game.

Oklahoma led almost the entire contest, although by never more than seven points. With just 1:44 remaining in the game, Oklahoma State quarterback Josh Fields completed a 14-yard touchdown pass to Rashaun Woods, giving the Cowboys a 16-13 upset victory.

Oklahoma State had given up more than 400 yards of offense in each of its last six games, and there was no reason to expect that things would be any different against the potent OU offense. That turned out to be a giant miscalculation.

The Sooners ended up with zero yards rushing for the game, largely due to OSU’s seven sacks of OU quarterback Nate Hybl. Hybl also threw three interceptions to add to the Sooners’ problems on offense.

Oklahoma State had come dangerously close to upsetting Oklahoma the year before — in OU’s undefeated championship season — but the Sooners were able to escape with a 12-7 victory in Stillwater that wasn’t decided until the final play of the game.

The 2001 win by Oklahoma State ended a 19-game home winning streak by the Sooners and also knocked them out of a chance to play in the Big 12 Championship as well national title contention.
