Tommy McDonald

A good number of Sooner fans won’t even remember the great Tommy McDonald. The two-time All-American halfback never played in a losing game in the three seasons he played for coach Bud Wilkinson and Oklahoma.

McDonald was an All-American on the 1955 and ’56 Sooner teams that went 21-0 and 12-0 in Big Seven play. He won the Maxwell Award as college football most outstanding player in 1956 and played on two OU national championship teams.

Oklahoma was one of the first college teams I saw playing on national television when I was a young boy, and McDonald was my favorite Sooner player at that time. I have been a passionate fan of Oklahoma football ever since.

McDonald went on to a career in the National Football League with five different teams. He played 12 seasons in the NFL, where he was utilized as a wide receiver. He caught 495 passes for over 8,400 yards and 84 touchdowns.
