#5 – Sept. 17, 2011 – Oklahoma 23 at Florida State 13

Oklahoma had beaten Florida State 47-17 in Norman the year before in the first of a two-game, home-and-home series. That was the first time these two elite football brands had played each other since the national championship game in January 2001, won by the underdog but No. 1-ranked Sooners 13-2.

The second game in the two-game, nonconference series was played in Tallahassee, Fla., in 2011, featuring No. 1 Oklahoma against the No. 5-ranked Seminoles.

The 2011 matchup was expected to be a much closer game than the OU runaway in Norman the year before, and that is exactly the way things turned out.

Winning big games on the road had become a problem for the Sooners for several seasons preceding this game, and nothing would be bigger than beating a top-10 team on the road in one of the most difficult places to play in college football.

The Sooners scored on their opening possession and led the Seminoles 13-6 heading to the fourth quarter.

Five minutes into the final quarter, Florida State scored a touchdown to draw even at 13 apiece. The Sooners responded on its next possession, with quarterback Landry Jones connecting with wide receiver Kenny Stills on a 37-yard scoring pass to break the tie and put OU back out in front for good.

The Sooners would add a field goal to complete a 23-13 victory and give Bob Stoops his biggest win over a top-five opponent since defeating then-No. 2 Texas Tech 65-21 at home in 2008.

Oklahoma picked off three Florida State passes and recorded six quarterback sacks in the game. The Sooner defense played superbly, allowing the high-powered Seminole offense just 219 total yards and a measly 27 on the ground.

OU would lose two games in 2011 – at Baylor, at Oklahoma State and at home to Texas Tech, snapping a 36-game home winning streak. The Sooners ended the season with a 10-3 overall record and a victory over Iowa in the Insight Bowl.
