#6 – Sept. 28, 2013 – Oklahoma 35 at Notre Dame 21

There are very few teams that Oklahoma has played more than a handful of times in its football history that have a winning record against the Sooners. Notre Dame is one of that select few.

The Sooners and Fighting Irish have met a total of 10 times in football, and Notre Dame has won eight of the 10 games.

Notre Dame was the last team Oklahoma lost to (in the season opener in 1953) before embarking on its historic 47-game winning streak. The Irish were also the team that snapped the streak, with a 7-0 win at OU in the fifth game of the 1956 season.

On Oct. 27, 2012, Notre Dame rolled into Norman, Okla., as the fifth-ranked team in the country. The Sooners were the No. 8 team in the nation at the time, but proved to be no match for the mighty Irish, losing 30-13 in a game that was actually close for three quarters before Notre Dame erupted for 20 points in the final quarter.

Oklahoma got another shot at Notre Dame the following season, but this time the game was at Notre Dame. The 2013 game was Bob Stoops’ third time coaching the Sooners against Notre Dame, and he was still looking for his first win over the Irish.

Stoops was hoping that his Irish Catholic upbringing in neighboring Ohio would help out his Sooners’ squad in South Bend and that the third time taking on Notre Dame would prove to be charm, as the saying goes.

There might have been something to all of that as Oklahoma intercepted two Notre Dame passes in the first three minutes of the game and turned both into touchdowns to take an early 14-0 advantage.

That proved to be the difference in the game as the 14th-ranked Sooners prevailed 35-21 behind the stellar quarterback play of Blake Bell. Making just his second career start at quarterback for OU, Bell completed 22 of 30 passes for 232 yards and two touchdowns. Oklahoma also had 220 rushing yards in the game.

The victory was just OU’s second all-time against Notre Dame, but as history has shown, any win by the Sooners over the Irish is cause for celebration.
