Oklahoma Sooner sports: Reflecting on a championship year in multiple disciplines
By Chip Rouse
Oklahoma men and women steamroll to a second consecutive NCAA Gymnastics Championship
It started with men’s and women’s gymnastics. For the second year in a row, both the Sooner men and women swept their way to a second consecutive national championship. When OU won the men’s and women’s NCAA Gymnastics Championship a year ago, no other college program had won both championships in the same year.
In the women’s competition, held in April in St. Louis, Oklahoma posted an NCAA-record team score of 198.3875 to win its third national title in the sport in the last four seasons.
OU tied with Florida for the national crown in 2014 and has won it outright the last two years. The Sooner women have advanced to the finals of the NCAA Gymnastics Championships, which is referred to as the Super Six, in each of the last five years and seven times overall.
The Sooners have been even more dominant nationally in men’s gymnastics. A week after the OU women walked away with their second straight national title, the men blew away the field to return a third consecutive national title to Norman. Oklahoma has won 11 national championships in men’s gymnastics. That ranks second to only Penn State (12) for the most national titles in the sport.
