Pair of Former OU Baseball Pitchers, Now MLB Starters, Out With Injuries
By Chip Rouse
Three former OU baseball pitchers are starters on three different major league teams this season, but two of the three are currently are out of action on the disabled list.
Garrett Richards of the Los Angeles Angels, Jon Gray of the Colorado Rockies and Chase Anderson of the Milwaukee Brewers, all former Sooners, are all listed as starters on their respective MLB teams, but only two of them are healthy and currently playing.
Richards was put on the 60-day disabled list after just one start and 4.2 innings this season after suffering what has been described as a nerve irritation that is causing weakness in the bicep of his right arm.
In his seventh season as a member of the Angels, Richards missed most of last season with an elbow injury. He underwent stem cell therapy as an alternative to Tommy John surgery and told the Orange County Register recently that his elbow and shoulder never felt better and is not related the elbow injury from last season.
Richards was a 2009 first-round selection by the Angels. He made his major league debut in 2011, seeing action in seven games that season. He has a career won-loss record of 40-32 and a 3.56 ERA.
Jonathan Gray – who goes by Jon now – began the 2017 season as one of the starting pitchers for the Rockies. The 2011, 10th-round draft pick out of Oklahoma started three games this season before reinjuring a toe in a game at San Francisco in the second week of the season. Gray had first suffered the injury during spring training.
Before getting hurt and going on the DL, Gray had an ERA of 4.38 in 12.1 innings. He is in his third major league season with the Rockies and owns a career record of 10-12 with a 4.76 ERA.
Chase Anderson left Oklahoma after the 2009 season. He was drafted in the ninth round of the 2009 MLB amateur draft by the Arizona Diamondbacks. He pitched two seasons with the D-Backs before being traded to the Milwaukee Brewers.
Anderson has started four games for the Brewers in 2017. His record is 2-0, with a 1.13 ERA. In four major league seasons, Anderson has a winning record of 26-24 and a career ERA of 4.09.
