One week removed from the Sooner women winning the NCAA Championship, the Sooner men are after the exact same thing, attempting to make it two years in a row that Oklahoma gymnastics has swept both national titles.

The OU men’s gymnastics team is in West Point, N.Y., this weekend competing in the NCAA Men’s Gymnastics Championships. The No. 1-ranked Sooners are one of 12 teams competing in this year championship. After Friday night, the competition will be cut down to just six teams that will battle it out in the championship finals on Saturday.

The Sooner men are two-time defending champions and are seeking to become the first team since Nebraska to win the national championship in men’s gymnastics in three successive years. Nebraska won five consecutive national titles between 1979 and 1983.

Oklahoma head coach Mark Williams was on the Nebraska team that won the NCAA Men’s Championship in 1979. Since becoming head coach at OU in 2000, Williams’ Sooner squads have won seven national titles and 15 conference championships, including the last six.

More from Oklahoma Sooners

This will be the third consecutive season the Sooners have gone into the NCAA Championships with a undefeated record in the regular season. The OU men have won or finished first in every meet they have competed in since coming in second in the 2014 NCAA team finals.

The Sooners finished the season ranked No. 1 with a four-score team average of a nation-best 433.067. Stanford was the next closest team, with an average score of 422.100.

Oklahoma ranked No. 1 in the country as a team in all six events (floor exercise, pommel horse, rings, vault, parallel bars and high bar) and also claimed the top spot among individual competitors in all six events.

Sophomore Yul Moldauer is the top-ranked individual in three events (floor, rings and parallel bars). Muldauer was the first freshman in NCAA history to win the national title in the all-around competition last year.

If the Sooners are crowned national champions in Saturday’s finals, it will be Oklahoma’s 11th national title in men’s gymnastics. That would leave OU one shy of the record of 12, owned by Penn State.
