Oklahoma Softball: Notable Numbers at Big 12 Midseason Mark
By Chip Rouse
Zeros were wild Tuesday night at Marita Hynes Field in Norman as the eighth-ranked Oklahoma softball team rolled to its 16th consecutive victory, an 8-0 shutout of North Texas.
Not only did the Mean Green come up empty on the scoreboard against the reigning Women’s College World Series champions, but they have now failed to win a game over the Sooners in 29 attempts.
Oklahoma and North Texas have played 19 of the 29 games between the two teams in Norman, and the Sooners are 19-0 at home against the Mean Green, who haven’t been all that mean when OU has been the opponent.
The Sooners have won all 17 of their home games this season. Dating back to last season, Oklahoma has gone 32 straight games in ringing up a 32-0 record at home.
Tuesday’s 8-0 win over the Mean Green was the 13th time OU has blanked its opponent this season. The Sooners also have won by run rule 13 times this season.
Oklahoma is a perfect 9-0 in Big 12 play. The Sooners are 30-7 against nonconference opponents in 2017. They are 11-0 in true road games and 11-7 on neutral fields against teams outside of the Big 12.
Last weekend’s road series at Kansas marked the midway point in OU’s 2017 conference schedule. They begin the second half of their conference schedule at home this weekend hosting 13th-ranked Baylor (35-7, 8-1). The Bears are currently tied with Oklahoma State, a half-game back of the Sooners.
Here are a few more notable numbers compiled by the Sooner softball team at the midseason mark in Big 12 play:
.355 – The Sooners’ team batting average through the first nine games against Big 12 teams. That is second to Baylor’s .360.
.639 – Sophomore second baseman Caleigh Clifton’s league-leading on-base percentage.
.975 – The Sooners’ Big 12-best fielding percentage.
1.45 – Oklahoma’s league-leading staff earned run average in Big 12 games.
11 – Junior catcher Lea Wodach returned to the starting lineup on Tuesday after missing the last 11 games with an injury.
14 – Sophomore first baseman Shay Knighten leads the Big 12 with 14 runs batted in in nine games. She also tops the conference with an .852 slugging percentage.
17 – Sophomore first baseman Shay Knighten and freshman Nicole Mendes each have 17-game on-base streaks.
