Oklahoma Football: Five Big 12 Players Who Will Strike Fear in Sooners in 2017
By Chip Rouse
TCU All-Purpose Player KaVontae Turpin
TCU junior KaVontae Turpin is listed on the depth chart as a wide receiver, but that only tells part of the story. His size and lightning speed is well suited for the receiver position, but the way head coach Gary Patterson utilizes Turpin can and will hurt you in multiple ways.
His quickness and acceleration makes Turpin an immediate and present danger returning kicks and punts, and on offense he is utilized both as a receiving target and on occasional running plays.
Turpin’s 2016 numbers were very misleading. He played in only eight games, missing five because of injury. Even then, he totaled almost 1,000 all-purpose yards, second best on the team.
In his award-studded 2015 freshman season, Turpin caught 45 passes for 649 yards and produced over 1,500 all-purpose yards.
If he can stay healthy, Turpin is the type of player that can beat you with one swift swing of the sword or by a thousand cuts. He is a very real threat to score virtually every time he touches the ball.
The Sooners will need to know where this guy is on the field on every TCU offensive possession and kick/punt return. Turpin is going to make teams pay in some form or fashion in a game. The trick is in limiting his opportunities to beat you.
