Oklahoma Football: Seven Sooners Who Are Stars in Waiting to Watch for Come Fall

Wide Receiver Jeffery Mead Primed for Standout Senior Season
Two years ago, it was Sterling Shepard who led the way among Sooner receivers. In 2016, it was senior speedster Dede Westbrook who stepped up as a prime-time receiving target. There are some who believe that Jeffery Mead, a senior in 2017, will be the next man up.
The 6-foot, 5-inch wide receiver started seven games a year ago and caught 10 passes for 216 yards and three touchdowns, all but one of those catches coming in the second half of the season.
One of his three touchdown catches came in the regular-season finale against Oklahoma State, a 42-yard reception that helped the Sooners to a 38-20 win that clinched Oklahoma’s second consecutive Big 12 championship.
Mead’s size and height advantage over smaller defensive backs is something OU offensive coordinator Lincoln Riley would like to take full advantage of in the 2017 season.
In this year’s annual spring game, Mead caught three passes for a game-high 111 yards, including a 70-yard touchdown catch from backup quarterback Kyler Murray.
