Ricky DeBerry Adds to a Solid Sooner Linebacker Corps
Oklahoma has produced some outstanding linebackers in its history, and redshirt sophomore Ricky DeBerry may be one in that same mold.
The 6-foot, 1-inch, 244-pound DeBerry, from Mechanicsville, Va., was moved to inside linebacker during the offseason. Last season he spelled Ogbonnia “Obo” Okronkwo, and he got the start in the Kansas game when Okronkwo was out with an injury.
If you aren’t familiar with DeBerry, you will be in the coming season.
He played in only six games in the 2016 season. Barring injury or some other unforeseen circumstance, that won’t be the case in 2017.
In his first game as a Sooner, DeBerry had a tackle and a fumble recovery against Louisiana-Monroe, and he played well against Kansas in place of Obo.
Oklahoma beat out some big-name programs for DeBerry’s services when he was recruited as a member of the Sooners’ 2015 class. Among those schools who were also very interested in the player Scout.com rated as the No. 25 overall recruit and No. 3 linebacker in the country were Alabama, Michigan State, Auburn, and Texas A&M.
