Oklahoma baseball has been defying the experts all season, but the Sooners hit a bit of a speed bump over the weekend.

Not only did Oklahoma lose its first Big 12 series, but the fact that the Sooners did so to hated archrival Texas rubbed even more salt in the wound.

Texas won the first game of the series on Friday by a score of 5-3 and followed that with a 9-3 blowout of the Sooners on Saturday. OU got a strong dual pitching performance from freshman Nathan Wiles and Sophomore Connor Berry for a 2-1 victory in the series finale on Sunday.

In losing two of three on the road at Texas, the Sooners picked up losses number seven and eight on the season to go along with 27 wins. Losing their first Big 12 series made for a disappointing weekend at Texas, but OU baseball is still well ahead of where it was at this same time a year ago.

By winning on Sunday, the Sooners have now won every Sunday game they have played this season and stand a perfect 7-0 on Sundays.

Here are some more notable numbers from the weekend baseball series with Texas:

  • The Longhorns scored their only run on Sunday in the first inning. They scored in the opening inning in all three games. Oklahoma has allowed its opponent to score in the first inning eight times out of 35 games this season. The Sooners are 6-2 in those games, with both losses coming against Texas.
  • Three OU pitchers combined to strikeout 10 Texas batters in Sunday’s 2-1 Oklahoma victory. Sooner pitchers also fanned 11 Longhorns in Friday’s game. Nineteen times this season, OU pitchers have recorded 10 or more strikeouts in a game.
  • One of the Sooner super sophomores this season, Brylie Ware, went 4 for 11 at the plate in the Texas series. On Sunday, he had two hits in two plate appearances on Sunday, giving his a dozen multi-hit games this season.
  • Senior center fielder Ben Hollas endured a 12-pitch at bat in the seventh inning on Sunday before rocketing a double into the left field corner, driving in what proved to be the winning run.
  • The Sooners, the Big 12’s second-best hitting team in the Big 12, managed just 19 total hits in the three games with archrival Texas.
  • Oklahoma enters this week with a 5-4 record in Big 12 play, good enough for fourth place in the current league standings.
