Who Will Spell QB Baker Mayfield?

Baker Mayfield is the entrenched starter entering the 2017 season, so that much is certain and settled. That’s what happens when you follow up an outstanding debut in 2015 with what was arguably an even better campaign in 2016.

A much more intriguing question is who will backup Mayfield? The Sooners have plenty of talent at quarterback, starting with sophomore Austin Kendall and former five-star recruit and Texas A&M transfer Kyler Murray.

Incoming four-star recruit Chris Robison is talented, but it’s doubtful he will compete for any significant reps. So, the race to backup Mayfield is really between Murray and Kendall.

Right now, it appears Kendall has the backup job in hand. But Lincoln Riley would be wise to utilize Kyler Murray’s talents in some way; even though the former five-star recruit fell short at A&M, he led Allen High School to three straight state titles and 43 consecutive wins.

Talent is not an issue with Murray, so if Riley can figure out a way to get him playing time, the Oklahoma offense could gain a lethal wrinkle.

As far as the quarterbacks are concerned, the 2017 spring game will be intriguing solely due to the Murray factor. And while Lincoln Riley definitely won’t show the world what he has up his sleeve for 2017, it would be a plus to see that the talented Murray will be used in some way.
