When you lose almost twice as many games as you win, it is a lot easier to single out the five best victories, which we’ve done for men’s Oklahoma basketball for the 2016-17 season.

Although the Sooners lost a program-record 20 games this season, eight of those losses were by six or fewer points and five by four or less. And in the majority of those games, Oklahoma led their opponent more than halfway through the second half.

Close doesn’t count in this game, though, Only if you are the higher number of the two on the scoreboard.

The bottom line, however, is that the Sooners did play very well at times this season, and the experience this young OU group gained from playing in tight games down the stretch will be invaluable next season and beyond.

You can make a strong case that Oklahoma’s best five games of the season did not all end in Sooner victories. In fact, two of the games we’ve identified as “best” OU performances of 2016-17 were games that OU had every chance of winning but, in fact, did not.
