As we draw closer to the start of another college football season, it’s not too early to begin familiarizing ourselves with the players and jersey numbers that are expected to be key contributors in the 2016 season of OU football.

We begin our 2016 preseason roster check with wide receiver Geno Lewis, who is a new Sooner name to get to know.

A Pennsylvania native from Wilkes-Barre, Pa., Lewis may be new to fans of Oklahoma football, but he is not new to college football, having played the past three seasons at Penn State. He has one more season of eligibility and has elected to play it at OU under the NCAA transfer rule that allows student-athletes who have graduated to transfer and play immediately without having to sit out a year.

The addition of Lewis to the roster comes at a very good time with the Sooners having lost almost half of their pass receiving yardage and catches from last season with the departure of wide receivers Sterling Shepard and Durron Neal.

Lewis is the second Penn State wide receiver in recent memory to transfer to Oklahoma. Justin Brown made a similar journey in 2012, and the Sooners are hoping that the addition of Lewis will work out as well for the Crimson and Cream as it did with Brown four years ago.

Lewis caught 90 passes in his three seasons at Penn State, averaging 13.1 yards per catch. His best season was in 2014, when he had 55 receptions for 751 yards and a couple of touchdown catches.

“I thought it would be a great opportunity to help this team get even further than they did last year.” —Geno Lewis, Sooner wide receiver

Asked what attracted him to Oklahoma when he made the decision to transfer, Lewis said, in an interview posted on the OU athletic website,  that he didn’t honestly know that much about the Sooners beforehand.

“I did a little bit if research on the school and the players there,” he said. “Obviously I had seen them in the Playoff last year, so they were doing really well, and I thought it would be a great opportunity to help this team get even further than they did last year.

“I think this is going to be a great opportunity,” Lewis went on to add. “I played in the spread in high school, so I’m coming back to my roots. I’m really excited and I know the sky is the limit for this offense.”
