OU Football’s Two 700-Yard Games in 2015 Not the Best in Big 12
By Chip Rouse
There is no denying that the Big 12 was the most prolific offensive conference in the country last football season. OU football was a part of all of that craziness and video-game-like offensive madness, but far from the best at it.
Oklahoma averaged 530.2 yards of total offense per game last season. That was the seventh best offensive output in the nation a year ago, but only fourth best in the Big 12.
Baylor, Texas Tech and TCU all produced higher per-game offensive numbers than the Sooners.
Baylor actually led the country, averaging 616 yards of total offense per game, over the second-best team, Texas Tech (579 yards per game), and TCU (563 ypg). All four Big 12 schools average nearly 7.0 yards per play last season
Led by the Big 12 Offensive Player of the Year, quarterback Baker Mayfield, Oklahoma exceeded 700 yards of total offense twice in the 2015 season, and it almost eclipsed the 700-yard mark a third time, registering 684 yards in a 36-point home victory over Iowa State.

The Sooners ran up 773 total offensive yards (487 passing and 286 rushing) in a 52-38 win over Tulsa last season. Interestingly, the 38 points scored by Tulsa in that game was the most all last season against Oklahoma. OU also had a 700-yard day against Kansas 710 total yards) in a 62-7 Sooner victory.
To show how unusual it is for a team to run up those kind of offensive numbers in a game, Oklahoma reached the 700-yard level just one other time in the three seasons prior to 2015.
The Sooners’ two games of 700-plus yards a year ago was second best in the country, tied with three other schools (TCU, Oregon and Cincinnati).
In the last four years, Oklahoma has gone over 700 yards of offense three times total. In 2015 alone, Baylor, the country’s No. 1 offensive team, did it a total of five times, including a 793-yard effort against Rice (427 rushing and 366 rushing) and 785 yards of total offense vs. Lamar (412 rushing and 373 passing).
