We know about the big names who command the headlines on the current edition of the Oklahoma football squad, but we also know that every season has its fill of surprise performances that contribute in a big way to the team’s success.

We’re into the dog days of summer, which always signals that we’re also just days away from the start of preseason training sessions and preparation for 2016 college football season.

This will be the 122nd season of Oklahoma football, and all indications are that it should be another banner year for the crimson and cream as it goes after its 10th Big 12 championship and 46th conference title all-time.

Sooner fans are used to hearing the names Baker Mayfield, Samaje Perine, Joe Mixon when the offense is on the field – and something good usually happens when one or more of that trio is involved in the on-field action. The same rings true with Jordan Evans, Charles Walker and Jordan Thomas on the defensive side of the ball.

But who are the Sooner players who are going to step up and surprise us with stellar performances, robust play and consistently strong contributions and may not be registering high on our radar to start the new season? Here are five players to keep a close eye on this season.
