On several occasions in this space in the last few weeks I’ve written and commented about the highly successful sports season enjoyed across the board by the OU Sooners in 2015-16.

It’s one thing for me to write about the incredible national accomplishments of multiple Oklahoma athletic teams this past academic year, but when others outside of the realm of the University of Oklahoma and the Big 12 Conference champion the same cause, it becomes even more special and noteworthy.

CBSSports.com has named the University of Oklahoma the Best in College Sports for the 2015-16 sports year

Oklahoma was the only school to finish among the final four teams in the NCAA national championships of the two biggest college sports: football and basketball. In fact, a total of six Sooner athletic teams were among the final four teams left standing in the national championships of their respective sports.

The Sooners did not win the national championship in either football or men’s basketball, but they did claim national crowns in both men’s and women’s gymnastics (something that had never been done before by the same school in the same year) and in softball.

The Oklahoma men’s tennis team came up just short of adding a fourth national title this past year to the school’s athletic trophy case, losing to Virginia in the championship final.

In addition to the team accomplishments, OU basketball All-American Buddy Hield won both the Naismith Trophy and the Wooden Award as college basketball’s best player this past season. Five Sooners, including Hield were named Big 12 Player of the Year in their sport: Hield (basketball), Baker Mayfield (football), Erin Miller (softball), Chayse Capps (women’s gymnastics) and Maegan Neihart (rowing).

And the individual accolades didn’t stop there. Five OU head coaches were named Big 12 Coach of the Year in their respective sports: Bob Stoops (football), Patty Gasso (softball), K.J. Kindler (women’s gymnastics), Mark Williams (men’s gymnastics) and Jim VanHootegem (women’s outdoor track and field).

Oklahoma beat out North Carolina and Notre Dame to become the choice of the CBSSports.com as the Best in College Sports during the recently concluded college athletic season.
