For the second weekend in a row, the Oklahoma baseball team finds itself competing for attention with one of the school’s other major sports programs.

A week ago, it was college basketball and the Sooners’ appearance in the NCAA Basketball Championship’s Final Four. This weekend, it is football. – which, of course, is king at Oklahoma – and the traditional Red-White Spring Game.

OU is home on the baseball diamond for a second straight weekend as the Baylor Bears come to town sporting a season record very similar to the Sooners. Both teams are 15-14 in the won-lost column, although the Bears stand a full-game better than Oklahoma in the Big 12 standings with a 3-3 conference record.

The Sooners bring a two-game winning streak to the weekend series with Baylor and have won four of their last five games, including a series win last weekend over the Texas Longhorns.

Junior shortstop Sheldon Neuse is having a terrific season so far, leading the Sooners in hitting with 42 hits and a .396 average, which places him third in the Big 12. Six of those 42 hits have gone out of the yard, which also stands third in the conference, and three more have ended up as triples.

Outside of Neuse, the Oklahoma bats have not been particularly consistent through the first 29 games. Neuse is the only Sooner hitting above .300. Only Oklahoma State has a lower team average than OU’s .253 batting average.

Baylor is led at the plate by left fielder Darryn Sheppard, who is hitting .351, right back of OU’s Neuse among the league leaders in hitting. Sheppard also has three home runs and 27 runs batted in. Two other Baylor hitters are above .300: first baseman Kameron Esthay (.330) and catcher Matt Menard (.328).

Freshman right-hander Chris Andritsos (4-2, 2.65 ERA) will get the start for the Sooners in the series-opener on Friday. Another freshman hurler, right-handed Ryan Madden (1-1, .2.55) will go on Saturday, and veteran right-hander Jake Elliot (0-0, 4.88) will draw the starting assignment in the series finale on Sunday.

The Sooners have won just one of three games in each of the last three regular-season series with the Bears, but own an 38-35 record in the all-time series between the two schools.
