The history of Oklahoma football is rich in tradition and unbridled success and covers more than a century. As you might imagine, there have been quite a few memorable games over that stretch. Most of the Sooners’ national recognition on the gridiron has occurred over the last 66 seasons, or since 1950. Because of that, we have narrowed the span of time for this memory walk back through history, from 1950 to the present.

Since legendary head coach Bud Wilkinson took over at Oklahoma in the late 1940s, the Sooners have won 609 football games, lost 181 and played to 11 ties. That is a winning percentage of .760, among the very best in college football over that time.

Three Oklahoma head coaches – Bud Wilkinson, Barry Switzer and Bob Stoops – are responsible for 79 percent, or 481, of those victories.

In the context of this collection of the 30 best games in modern Oklahoma football history, however, the term “best” does not necessarily equate to a Sooner victory. There are several games on our list, which we will present chronologically by calendar date, that did no go the Sooners’ way, but nevertheless are among the biggest or most memorable games in the modern era.

The vast majority of the games featured are from the Stoops era (15). I have done this purposefully because I believe the best of the Oklahoma games since Bob Stoops came aboard in 1999 are the most relevant to a good percentage of the followers of this website as well as being among the best games over the full spectrum of Sooner football history. Nine of the games are from the Switzer era (both his time as offensive coordinator and head coach) and six from the Wilkinson time frame.
