Mark Andrews’ Role Will Increase

Ever since Jermaine Gresham left for the NFL, Sooner fans have bemoaned the lack of tight end play on the Sooner offense. Even when Blake Bell moved to tight end in 2014, it did not move the needle that much in terms of tight-end offensive output. But judging from his performance against the Golden Hurricane, Mark Andrews may at long last become the next great Sooner tight end.

Against Tulsa, Andrews had three receptions for 87 yards and two scores, for a healthy 29-yards-per-catch average. Andrews not only demonstrated great ball-handling skills, but also excellent field vision and top-notch speed. And at six-feet-five and 245 pounds, Andrews is an imposing target who is on his way to becoming Baker Mayfield’s favorite security blanket. The best part? Andrews is only a redshirt freshman, so the sky’s the limit as he learns the game and gets comfortable in Riley’s system. And that should be a scary proposition for opposing defenses.
