Joe Mixon May Be Joe Washington 2.0

Oklahoma’s Joe Mixon continues to prove that his gaudy five-star recruiting ranking is no mirage. The California running back once again demonstrated his versatility, as he caught six passes for 48 yards, had one touchdown reception, and rushed for 28 yards on just six carries. If not for a costly fumble on the Tulsa 20-yard line as Oklahoma was driving to potentially put the game out of reach, Mixon may have had more touches.

As Mixon continues to grow and learn the game, his contributions in Riley’s wide-open attack will only increase. Defenses must respect a powerful running back with soft hands who can line up as a receiver and make things happen on the passing game, especially when opposing linebackers get the task of trying to contain Mixon. But if he wants to remain out of Bob Stoops’ doghouse, Mixon must avoid costly fumbles.

In fact, Mixon is already reminding Sooner fans of Joe Washington, another versatile Sooner running back who was a threat to score every time he touched the ball. That’s certainly lofty company to keep, so here’s hoping that Mixon continues to dazzle. In fact, maybe someone should Mixon some silver shoes.
