Rumors: Mike Stoops to interview for LSU defensive coordinator job
By Chuck Chaney
Local CBS affiliate, KWTV News Channel 9 sports director, Dean Blevins is reporting that Oklahoma’s Defensive Coordinator Mike Stoops is interviewing for the defensive coordinator position at LSU in Dallas, Texas tonight.
"I’ve learned OU Defensive Coordinator Mike Stoops is scheduled to interview for the same position at LSU with head coach Les Miles. Sources tell me it’s expected Stoops will be offered the job when the two meet in Dallas tonight at 6 p.m. If offered, Stoops would take a couple of days to make the decision whether to leave brother Bob’s staff, where he has served the last three seasons as associate head coach and defensive coordinator.-Dean Blevins article on News9.com"
Stoops, who was hired three years ago to take over a fledgling defense for his brother, Bob Stoops, has yet to live up to the expectations he set before he left in 2003. Oklahoma’s overall defense ranked just 55th in the nation and were the scapegoat of a 40-6 spanking by Clemson in the Russell Athletic Bowl on Dec. 29.
While Blevins said there was no indication that Bob was going to replace Mike, there is John Hoover of the Tulsa World saying that Mike was gone one way or another.
Les Miles, the LSU head coach, is looking to replace John Chavis, the long time defensive coordinator who left for Texas A&M this off season. It’s reported that Chavis took a pay raise from $1.3 million to the $1.7 million offered by Texas A&M.
Another Sooners site, The FB Brainiacs have confirmed that Stoops is in Dallas and will interview with LSU.
Oklahoma is fresh off a very disappointing season at 8-5 and an embarrassing loss in their final two games of the season. Bob Stoops often isn’t known for firing his co-workers, but has done it over the last couple of seasons with little to no improvement on the field. The defense has fallen since the hire of Stoops.
Oklahoma has watched Clemson’s defense soar to No. 1 in the nation under former Oklahoma defensive coordinator, Brent Venables.
