Oklahoma football: This team is different, Sooners find ways to win

You saw it on social media in the second quarter, many were ready to meltdown with the best of them, as the Oklahoma Sooners lately have been known for their embarrassing collapses in key games. However, in Saturday’s 45-33 win over the West Virginia Mountaineers, the Sooners did something we’re not super used to lately.

They found a way to win.

We’re not talking just sneaking out a close game where many flaws were exposed. They made the appopriate adjustments and exploited West Virginia’s faults. In the second half, they found themselves up by as many as three scores in the fourth quarter before the Mountaineers scored a meaningless touchdown late in the game.

More from Oklahoma Sooners

The No. 4 ranked Sooners showed some persaverance in the victory. In year’s past they may have folded, chalked it up to a tough road environment and Oklahoma would have been tagged as a team that’s overrated and not ready for the national playoff.

However, the Sooners responded to every single West Virginia touchdown. They did it with Samaje Perine or Alex Ross. Perine finished with 242 yards and four touchdowns. Alex Ross had over 200 all-pupose yards, including a 100-yard kickoff return for a touchdown that swung the momentum in Oklahoma’s favor.

Once Oklahoma came out and scored with Perine in the second half to take the 31-24 lead, the Sooners knew they had this game. They took a 38-27 lead and then a 45-27 lead, leading to many Mountaineer fans filing out of the stands well before the final gun sounded.

Bob Stoops and Co. had this team prepared. West Virginia’s offense may be one of the best we see this season and could have just rolled over, but they made their adjustments and showed the nation who was the better team.

The Sooners ended up winning convincingly on a night where all Top 5 teams struggled to get victories at home, the Sooners adjusted and won on the road. Those things may not matter a lot now, but down the road when the final standings are coming out, it’ll look good with the playoff selection committee when they sit down to make their selections.

It started last season against Oklahoma State. There were some implosions last season, but the come back and no quit attitude in the thrilling come back versus Oklahoma State showed there was something different happening. Then we saw them respond to Alabama’s come back in the Sugar Bowl. It’s led over to this season as the Sooners are proving to be winners this season.

If the Sooners keep these wins up, they might end up with a pretty nice gold trophy at the end of the season.
