Oklahoma Sooners head coach Bob Stoops caught a lot of flack when he questioned whether or not the SEC was really the best overall conference in college football. He had some good points when he pointed out how, while the top of the conference has some of the best teams in the nation, the bottom half leaves a lot to be desired. Now, another coach has stepped up as Kansas Jayhawks coach Charlie Weis said that Stoops has “a point” in his criticism.

Weis pointed out the stats of what he called the “good guys” and “bad guys” in the SEC. The conference has 14 teams, and five of them finished the 2012 college football season with losing records. Even more damaging to the credibility of the SEC is that the bottom eight teams finished 0-30 against the other six teams in the conference. That means 30 of the SEC’s wins in 2012 came by beating up the rest of their conference.

Weis looks at that wide valley between the six great SEC teams and the other eight and sees a conference that is top loaded, but overall, is not a consistent powerhouse conference.

“I’m just sayin’, you look at the bottom of our league and the bottom of their league, just going based off the numbers, there’s validity in what he said,” Weis said. “I’m just going based off the numbers, I mean, I’m a numbers guy. Just based off the numbers, you’d have to say he’s got a point.”

While the Big 12 only has 10 teams, they sent nine to bowl games, and that 90-percent ratio is the highest in the history of college football. While the Big 12 has not been able to beat the best teams in the SEC over the past few years, that only means that the top teams – Alabama, LSU, Florida, Texas A&M (which was a Big 12 team until last season), and Georgia – were some of the best teams in the entire nation.

Yes, the SEC has the best teams in the country, but Stoops point was that – from top to bottom – they do not have the best overall conference in college football. While that statement has put Stoops in the line of fire from fans from all over the country, his original point is valid. From the perspective of the entire conference, the SEC is not that much better than the Big 12. If the top 10 teams from the SEC played the top 10 teams from the Big 12, I would put money on an even swap, or a 6-4 SEC win at best. That is not dominance.
