Watching John Mateer takes Oklahoma fans' misery index to a new level

Life is currently miserable for Oklahoma fans.

The Sooners' 2026 season, and maybe even the entire program, plummeted to an all-time low while down 28-0 to No. 2 Georgia at halftime. There wasn't a moment more painful to watch unfold than quarterback John Mateer's fumble that led to a Georgia touchdown after a long drive and went viral because of how laughable it was.

Mateer was actually cruising in the drive and got his team down to Georgia's two-yard line. He had completed all four of his pass attempts on the drive for 63 yards, plus, not counting a sack, ran for another four yards on two carries.

The Sooners were on the cusp of making it a one-possession game and having a chance after a poor start. Then the absolute unthinkable happened.

Mateer rolled left, and as he had a man open in the end zone just two yards away, the ball slipped right out of Mateer's hand. Chris Cole then scooped it up, and away he went 85 yards for a touchdown that extended the Bulldogs' lead to 21-0 early in the second quarter.

It's even worse in slow motion and with every new angle.

And that was far from the end of Mateer's misfires after what was actually a solid start to the game.

Seven plays later on OU's next possession, Mateer severely underthrew a pass that was intercepted by KJ Bolden, who returned it 29 yards just outside of OU territory. It wasn't even a good play by the defender, just a terrible decision by Mateer.

But, wait, there's more.

On the next drive, Mateer fumbled yet again. He was sprinting right, trying to evade pressure while looking for a receiver, but completely ignored protecting the ball. Cole sacked him, and the ball hit the grass near the sideline before Cole (again) jumped on it.

The fumble resulted in another Georgia touchdown two plays later after the Bulldogs started on OU's 11-yard line. It doesn't matter how great Brent Venables' defense is, Georgia has the best offense in college football and can't be stopped after getting the ball in the shadow of the end zone.

Thankfully, OU got the ball back with just 57 seconds left before halftime, so they just ran out the clock with three run plays to head to the locker room with a 28-0 point hole but not a fourth straight turnover.

At the half, Mateer had completed 15 of his 19 passes with a 79% completion percentage for 139 yards. That's actually a pretty accurate half of football from Mateer, but the three turnovers are still inexcusable and have fans rightfully clamoring for a new quarterback to replace Mateer in hopes it puts an end to some misery.

This performance adds to what has already been a gloomy time throughout Sooner Nation after the offense has been awful in the last two games. There was no hope heading into Georgia, and now, it feels like there's no reason to care the rest of 2026 if the Sooners can't even score from two yards away after everything else had gone right.
