It was just the second meet of the season, but it had an NCAA Championship feel with three of the top four teams in the country competing against each other, including No. 1 Oklahoma.
You aren't going to get a lineup much better than the one that participated at the second annual Sprouts Farmer's Market Collegiate Quad at the Paycom Center in Oklahoma City this weekend, and it was just the second week of the season.
In addition to the No. 1 Oklahoma women's gymnastics team, the teams participating during the Saturday session were No. 2 LSU, No. 4 Utah and No. 6 California. Although the Sooners led after the first rotation and remained on top throughout, the meet was not decided until the final rotation.
The Sooners finished off the win with a sensational team score of 49.700 on the uneven bars to hold off the reigning national champions, the LSU Tigers, 197.950-197.650. Cal was third with a 197.275, and Utah came in fourth at 196.800.
These same four teams could realistically find themselves competing against each other again among the final four teams in the 2025 NCAA Women's Championships in Fort Worth, Texas, in April.
OU captured team wins in three of the four rotations, posting the top score in floor exercise (49.525), beam (49.525) and bars.
Senior Jordan Bowers won the all-around title with a score of 39.675. Audrey Davis scored a near-perfect top score of 9.975 on bars, and junior Faith Torrez had an equally strong performance on beam with a matching winning score of 9.975. Torrez also finished second in the all-around with a 39.625.
The Sooners stumbled a bit on vault in their third rotation and led by just .125 over LSU heading into the final rotation, which was bars for OU and LSU on the floor. That's when the Sooners showed their championship form, turning in a series of outstanding individual clutch performances.
Oklahoma's team score on bars was the ninth best in the event in program history.
"That was gold," OU coach K.J. Kindler said afterward. "Started the lineup off right where it needed to start (with Dani Sievers' leading off with a brilliant routine and stuck dismount for a 9.9). We watched stick after stick after stick, and it did not disappoint."
The top-ranked Sooners host their home opener at Lloyd Noble Center on Friday, a dual meet in the SEC against longtime former Big 12 foe Missouri.
