With under 50 days to go before the kickoff of another season and just a couple of weeks away from the start of preseason training camp for Oklahoma and all other college teams, surprisingly, this traditionally is the quietest time in terms of important college football news.

To help fill that void and continue to feed the insatiable appetite of college football news junkies, this is the time of the college football offseason when we start seeing all the national award watch lists, as well as the continuing parade of this-that-and-the-other lists and top (pick your number) rankings of teams, players, positions and historical happenings.

NFL.com showed some creativity earlier this month in coming up with one of those relevance-questionable listings by ranking the NFL's top-10 active triplets of quarterback, running back and wide receiver combinations by their college affiliation. The Oklahoma combination of Baker Mayfield (Tampa Bay Buccaneers), Joe Mixon (Houston Texans) and CeeDee Lamb (Dallas Cowboys) headed the list.

The Sooners edged out the Georgia combination of QB Matthew Stafford (Los Angeles Rams), RB James Cook (Buffalo Bills) ) and WR Ladd McConkey (Los Angeles Chargers). Alabama was No. 3 on the list with QB Tua Tagovailoa (Miami Dolphins), RB Jahmyr Gibbs (Detroit Lions) and WR DeVonta Smith (Philadelphia Eagles).

Ohio State ranked fourth on the list, followed by LSU, Clemson, Oregon, Iowa State, North Carolina and Michigan State.

Mayfield and Mixon were in the same backfield at Oklahoma in 2015-16. Mixon left for the NFL after the 2016 season, but Mayfield was still at quarterback in Lamb's OU freshman season in 2017.

In the NFL.com article ranking the best active NFL triplets by their college affiliation, deputy editor Gennaro Filice said this ranking does not include the tight end position as some other triplet rankings do. Otherwise, the outcome probably would have been a little different. But even then the Sooners would still boast Mark Andrews.

All player selections and rankings, he wrote, were "made with an eye toward the coming season. Past accomplishments do factor in, but this is essentially a forward-looking exercise."
