Pat McAfee and his crew had the best view possible to watch Ohio State defensive coordinator Jim Knowles at work.
The Pat McAfee Show had its own broadcast Monday night of the College Football Playoff National Championship Game, during which the Buckeyes beat the Notre Dame Fighting Irish 34-23. Instead of from the broadcast booth, Pat McAfee and his partners watched the game and commentated from the field, particularly from right behind an end zone most of the time.
The crew was back at its usual studio Tuesday for The Pat McAfee Show and recapped what all they had witnessed, giving special praise to Knowles for the win. McAfee also addressed the elephant in the room that Knowles is rumored to leave Ohio State to be the Oklahoma Sooners' new defensive coordinator.
None of the moves leading up to Knowles possibly going to OU make sense. Many don't believe the Knowles rumors because he'd be leaving such a perfect situation at a Blue Blood program coming off a national title with a fat paycheck. Knowles would join an OU program after a 6-7 season and whose head coach could just have one season left without a miraculous turnaround.
McAfee referenced family as a reason Knowles would leave his current situation for Oklahoma. Knowles has already spent time in the state before as Oklahoma State's defensive coordinator for four seasons.
The fact OU's defensive coordinator job is even open also doesn't make sense to most. Zac Alley left OU to be the defensive coordinator and assistant head coach at West Virginia, which is McAfee's alma-mater. Alley got a nice pay raise and re-joined his old boss, but he still left a Blue Blood SEC program for another struggling program in the Big 12 with less resources.
Despite all the confusion, the one thing for sure is that Jim Knowles is a dang good defensive coordinator. McAfee's crew kept a close eye on Knowles during pregame warmups then got to watch his defense at work in the biggest game possible.
"Jim Knowles comes in (three years ago), and then they get better every single year," co-host Anthony DiGuilio said. "They were the No. 2 defense last year, No. 1 defense this year. That guy is an assassin."
