The Oklahoma Sooners are quickly moving to the top of the list for a 2028 target as they start emphasizing that class after assembling the top 2027 group in the country.

After visiting Norman for the Sooners' spring game on Saturday, 2028 linebacker Reagan Smith told Parker Thune of Rivals that OU has asserted itself as a frontrunner in the early stages of his career. Smith was also in Norman last season, when the Sooners hosted Ole Miss.

"That's my favorite place to be at," Smith told Thune.

It's still early in the process of landing 2028 prospects, so that means not only will other programs enter the mix before a decision is made, but recruiting rankings and ratings will change dramatically, especially over the summer and throughout this football season.

Smith is listed as an edge rusher by 247Sports, but not ranked or rated by the outlet yet. Rivals, though, has Smith as a three-star recruit and the No. 43 linebacker in the 2028 class. He's also the No. 70 player in the state of Texas out of Pflugerville Weiss High School.

Last season as a sophomore, Smith tallied 70 tackles, 9.5 tackles for loss, four sacks, 15 quarterback hurries, and forced and recovered two fumbles. That showing caught the attention of Power Four programs, including OU.

Houston was Smith's first offer way back in January 2025, but on Jan. 29, 2026, the Sooners became Smith's second Power Four offer. Oklahoma State and TCU recently followed. He also holds offers from Tulsa, Texas State and UTSA.

These early offers to rising prospects have benefitted the Sooners tremendously recently, especially since general manager Jim Nagy and his staff became involved last February. OU's No. 1 2027 class is full of commits who were rather unknown when the Sooners discovered them before eventually soaring as a recruit, including running back Keldrid Ben, who went from unranked to the No. 5 prospect at his position.

The hope now is that the Sooners have the same results with the next group as they're still searching for their first 2028 commit after running back Micah Rhodes decommitted.
