Oklahoma fans were already upset about the time slot ESPN gave a marquee game between the No. 11 Sooners and No. 4 Alabama for Saturday, but now, Sooner Nation will also have to spend its afternoon listening to the worst broadcast crew possible for this particular matchup.
Instead of being at primetime, the Sooners will face the Crimson Tide at 2:30 p.m. CT Saturday in Tuscaloosa, and with Texas-Georgia getting ESPN's A Team that night, OU was dealt Sean McDonough doing play-by-play, Greg McElroy as analyst and Molly McGrath on the sidelines.
Former Alabama QB Greg McElroy calling Sooners' game vs Crimson Tide
There was an immediate issue about this crew with McElroy in the booth. Before his broadcast career, McElroy played quarterback for the Crimson Tide in 2007-10 and even led Alabama to a national championship in 2010 under future ESPN co-worker Nick Saban.
Despite being in an unbiased position, it's known McElroy tends to let his colors show when calling his alma mater. It's obviously common for former players to be in just about every booth nowadays, but ESPN has enough talent to keep alumni from calling massive games for their old teams.
And the issues don't stop there for this crew.
This is also the same broadcast duo that was on the call for the Sooners' 24-17 win against Auburn earlier this season in Norman. That was of course when OU wide receiver Isaiah Sategna III scored that controversial touchdown that was deemed to have used a "hideout tactic."
Auburn and the SEC eventually stirred the pot even more, but it was the announcers during the broadcast who initially sparked the play into something even more while going on and on about it, especially ESPN rules analyst Matt Austin.
That instance and McElroy covering his favorite team has Sooner fans planning to watch the game on mute or sync up OU's radio broadcast. And Sooner Nation isn't even the first fan base that has had to suffer through this.
Well, I’m sorry #Sooners fans.

I’d just turn on the radio call this weekend pic.twitter.com/DCavUofOHc
Greg McElroy? Awesome, can’t wait to listen to the unbiased BS he has to say during the game. https://t.co/7mmUocr05H

It’s wild that ESPN keeps putting Greg McElroy on Alabama games

Former Alabama players calling their game is so nasty. And McElroy is awful on top of that.

Sick work @espn https://t.co/reC5pSN8G1
Greg McElroy is the worst. He should be fired. He hates OU and I’m tired of listening to him do our games

I wish former players like Greg Mcelroy could not call their Alma Maters games. Alabama is the best in the country at everything according to Mcelroy.

Hey @espn - @GregMcElroy is way too biased to broadcast for your network. He is insufferable to listen to.

@espn why is there an Alabama alumni calling a game that Alabama is playing?
