Sooners battling blue bloods for 7-foot-5 rim protector in portal

This would definitely give the Sooners size.

Porter Moser has the Oklahoma Sooners in the mix for a Transfer Portal target who's impossible to overlook.

On3's Joe Tipton reported over the weekend a long list of programs that have already shown interest in USC transfer center Gabe Dynes, who's listed at a towering 7-foot-5, including the Sooners. The list also included Kentucky, Tennessee, Arizona, Baylor, Cincinnati, Louisville, Florida State, NC State, Ole Miss, St. Mary's, Washington and Xavier. Dynes already drew all this attention after just entering the portal on Friday.

Oklahoma in loaded race for USC transfer Gabe Dynes

Dynes spent just one season at USC before heading to the portal to play his final college basketball season elsewhere. In his lone season with the Trojans, Dynes averaged 2.9 points and 2.3 rebounds while appearing in 31 games and making six starts. Those stats don't pop at all, but the number that does draw attention is Dynes being listed at 7-foot-5, which makes him an asset for any team on the defensive end, which the Sooners desperately need. He had 31 blocks this past season.

Before getting to USC last year, Dynes spent his first two seasons at Youngstown State, where he was named to the Horizon League All-Defensive Team both years. He was also on the Horizon League All-Freshman Team in 2023-24. In his last season at Youngstown State in 2024-25, Dynes led the nation with 104 blocks. He had 61 as a freshman.

If Dynes' next team gets even close to that Youngstown State production next season, then he'll be worth whatever it takes to get him on a roster, especially for the Sooners, who ranked 11th in the SEC last season with 143 blocks.

The toughest part for the Sooners getting Dynes to Norman will likely be keeping him from returning home to Kentucky. Dynes is originally from Independence, Kentucky, and both the Wildcats and Cardinals are reportedly after him. Field of 68's Jeff Goodman reported Monday that Dynes has scheduled visits to Xavier, Kentucky, Louisville, NC State and Kansas.

There has been no report yet of Dynes visiting Oklahoma as the Sooners still need to add a big man from the portal.
