For 1,453 days Sooner Nation got to relish cheering for the best college softball team in the country. But on Monday night, the reign finally ended.
The Oklahoma Sooners lost to Texas Tech 3-2 in the semifinals of the 2025 Women’s College World Series at Devon Park. It took nearly a complete rebuild from last year for OU and the best pitcher in the country for Tech to finally end the Sooners’ run of four straight national championships. It's the first time since 2018 that OU failed to reach the WCWS championship series.
NiJaree Canady shut down the Sooners for 6 2/3 innings and then some before Abigale Dayton with an 0-2 count had a pinch of Sooner Magic left and hit a two-run homer to tie the game 2-2. But the Red Raiders ultimately walked things off in the next frame to get to the championship series in their first-ever WCWS appearance.
And for the first time since 2019, the OU softball season ended with a loss. Since then, every other fan base had their year end with heartbreak, expect for Sooner Nation.
Sure, OU fans would prefer to still be celebrating, but there certainly wasn't any disappointment throughout Sooner Nation on Monday night. There was an unprecedented four straight titles to enjoy. Then this year, it was supposed to be all over after Patty Gasso had to replace nearly the entire roster, yet with nine freshmen on the roster, it still seemed like the Sooners' time would never end.
Sooner Nation on Monday night simply appreciated what had happened with anticipation for what's next.
