The son of an Oklahoma Sooners legend keeps bouncing around after his original stop in Norman, but he should be at his final destination now.
Pete Nakos of On3 reported Monday that wide receiver Marcellus Crutchfield signed with the North Texas Mean Green out of the Transfer Portal for what should be his final year of eligibility at his fourth school. Crutchfield is the son of OU great Gerald McCoy, who was a two-time First-Team All-American defensive tackle for the Sooners in 2006-09 before a long and successful NFL career.
Marcellus Crutchfield signs with North Texas
Crutchfield signed with OU in 2020 as an unrated and unranked recruit out of Tampa Catholic High School in Tampa, Florida. He appeared in just one game in two seasons at OU. Although Crutchfield's time as a Sooner was not ideal, his commitment was still a huge deal between the father and son.
Missed this in the craziness of yesterday — Marcellus Crutchfield committed to the #Sooners. He’s the son of Gerald McCoy. It’s safe to say @Geraldini93 was fired up. 😂 pic.twitter.com/IoKVJeHEVJ

In 2022, Crutchfield transferred to Division-II Fort Hays State in Kansas. He played in six games in 2022 and four in 2023 because of a season-ending injury. Crutchfield then transferred to Toledo, where he didn’t see the field last season and maintained one more year of eligibility.
McCoy and his son made headlines in 2019 before Crutchfield went to OU. McCoy had signed with the Carolina Panthers after a nine-year stint with the Buccaneers, but his home was still in Tampa Bay, where Crutchfield also still lived and went to high school. With the Panthers playing in San Francisco, McCoy had to miss his son's high school senior night, so some of his former Buccaneers teammates attended in place of McCoy.
McCoy played 12 seasons in the NFL before retiring in 2021 as a six-time Pro Bowler and First-Team All-Pro in 2013.
