SEC Power Rankings: Conference depth continues to cause chaos and force movement

Do the Sooners deserve to stay atop the SEC?

With two weeks left in the college softball regular season, the SEC is more chaotic as ever as the league flexes its depth and even the top teams slip. Last week included every team in the last top 5 losing at least one game, so that forces some shuffling, but maybe not as much as expected since losing is just a way of life in the SEC at this point.

After a week that had the Sooners go 2-2, they still remain on top thanks to chaos everywhere else around the SEC and winning a series over Arkansas. With two series left against Georgia and Texas A&M, the Sooners should stay put at No. 1, but sweeps have become rare in this league.

Bama didn't deserve that top spot after falling to Samford during the week and sweeping the worst team in the conference. Basically, OU's loss to Oklahoma State and series win over Arkansas were better than the Crimson Tide's similar outcomes also with a midweek loss and SEC series win.

Texas dropped a game to Georgia while winning the series, but after already losing series to both OU and Bama, it will take a lot for the Longhorns to get higher than No. 3.

Arkansas stays put after losing two of three to Oklahoma. The Razorbacks have a series win over Florida already, so there was no reason to drop them after losing to the best team in the conference.

Florida was surprisingly the biggest victim of the week after dropping from No. 2 to No. 5. The Gators suffered an ugly loss to Auburn despite winning the series and there's no reason for them to be ahead of any of the teams above.

Texas A&M is on a nine-game winning streak with sweeps over both Mississippi schools the past two weekends. Despite the hot streak, though, every team above the Aggies still have better victories and have proven themselves more.

Tennessee is still trying to recover from a rough start to conference play after being the No. 1 team in the country. The Vols had a weekend off and lost to Duke in their last outing, so they still have to do more to move up.

Georgia lost a series to Texas, but still stole Game 2 to avoid a sweep and falling any further. The Bulldogs get the Sooners next, though, so life has become difficult for Georgia.

LSU swept Ole Miss and is on a four-game winning streak. With Mississippi State and Auburn ahead, the Tigers could end the regular season as hot as anyone else in college softball.

Mississippi State is slipping in these rankings during its four-game losing streak that includes a sweep to Texas A&M this past weekend. LSU is next for a series between teams headed in opposite directions.

South Carolina took a series from Missouri to jump the Tigers in these power rankings, which could be enough to hold the Gamecocks no lower than this the rest of the way.

The Tigers dropped a spot after losing two of three to South Carolina. Mizzou continues to hover at .500, but still belong ahead of the next three bottom teams.

Auburn finally leapt from that No. 14 spot thanks to stealing a win from Auburn and Ole Miss' struggles. Don't expect anymore jumps, though.

It just gets more puzzling how this Ole Miss team ever upset Tennessee in a series. The Rebels haven't won an SEC game since then and just continue to fall.

Kentucky was swept by Alabama. Wash, rinse, repeat. The Wildcats likely won't win another conference game as the worst team in the SEC.
